FlotSense

About

The degree and quality of aeration is an important operating parameter in a flotation process. Understanding and accurately determining the voidage in the flotation cell is fundamental to optimising its performance, as it directly impacts the bubble-particle interaction, froth stability, and ultimately the separation efficiency. Knowledge of the voidage enables control of the cell performance by adjusting process parameters such as the aeration rate, degree of agitation, as well as refinement of chemical addition.

Clarity has developed the FlotSense™ sensor to enable continuous real-time in-cell measurement of the pulp and froth phase voidage in a flotation cell.

Development and Implementation

The FlotSense™ is currently at the prototype stage and is available as a portable handheld unit. In this format, it offers a convenient way to measure voidage, allowing real-time assessment of aeration at different positions within the cell. Its handheld design makes it suitable for on-site inspections, troubleshooting, and laboratory investigations of flotation processes.

Clarity is actively advancing this technology to an industrial-grade, permanently installed device. This development will provide continuous, real-time voidage data, serving as a critical process input. This data will offer constant feedback to plant operators and serve as an input for control systems, enabling automated optimisation of aeration rates and overall cell performance.
